Getting a Marriage License for Alafaya Residents

Alafaya is part of Orange County. The Orange County Clerk of Courts runs the marriage license office. You need to visit the Orange County Courthouse at 425 N. Orange Ave., Orlando, FL 32801 to apply. The phone number is (407) 836-2000.

Both people applying for the license must show up at the same time. Bring a valid photo ID. This can be a driver license, passport, state ID, or military ID. U.S. citizens also need a Social Security number. If either party had a prior marriage, bring the date that marriage ended, whether by divorce, death, or annulment.

Alafaya is a census-designated place in east Orange County near the University of Central Florida. There is no local office for marriage licenses in Alafaya itself. Residents make the trip to the Orlando courthouse, which is about 15 miles west. The drive takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Fees for Marriage Licenses

A marriage license in Orange County costs $86. Couples who complete a premarital course pay just $61. The course must be finished within one year before you apply. Under Florida Statute 741.0305, the provider must be approved by the state for the discount to count.

The clerk office also performs ceremonies for $30. You can get married right at the courthouse if you want. Payment is accepted by cash or credit card. Personal checks are not taken.

Certified copies cost $9 for the first one and $7 for each extra. If you are not sure which year the marriage took place, the clerk may charge a $2 search fee for each year they look through. Copies can be ordered in person, by mail, or online through the clerk site.

Looking Up Marriage Records Online

Orange County offers online access to marriage records through the clerk website. You can search by name for free. The system shows both parties and the date of the marriage. Certified copies cost money to order, but the search itself has no charge.

The Florida Department of Health also has state records going back to 1927. A search and one certified copy from the state costs $5, with $4 for each additional. VitalChek offers another way to order at $15 plus processing fees. The county route is typically faster for recent Alafaya marriages.

Records before 1927 only exist at the county level. The state did not begin collecting marriage data until June 6, 1927. For very old records, contact the Orange County clerk directly.

Steps to Get Married in Alafaya

The process for Alafaya couples works like this:

  • Fill out a pre-application online at the Orange County clerk site
  • Both parties visit the courthouse together with valid photo ID
  • Provide Social Security numbers (U.S. citizens)
  • Pay $86 or $61 with a premarital course certificate
  • Florida residents wait three days unless a course was completed
  • The license stays valid for 60 days and works anywhere in Florida

The three-day waiting period comes from Florida Statute 741.04. It only applies to Florida residents. If you live out of state, there is no wait. Taking a premarital course from an approved provider eliminates the wait for everyone.

Who can perform the ceremony? Under Section 741.07, ordained ministers, judges, clerks and their deputies, and Florida notaries public all have the authority. Witnesses are not legally required in Florida, but most couples bring at least one. After the ceremony, the officiant has 10 days to sign the license and return it to the clerk for recording.

Public Records and Certified Copies

Marriage records in Orange County are public documents under Florida Statutes Chapter 119. Anyone can look at them or request copies. Personal details like Social Security numbers are redacted from public view.

To get a certified copy, you have three options. Order online through the clerk website for the fastest turnaround. Visit the courthouse in person at 425 N. Orange Ave., Orlando, FL 32801. Or send a mail request to the same address with a money order or cashier's check made out to Orange County Clerk of Courts.

If you just got married and need proof quickly, contact the county clerk first. State records take about 60 days to process after the ceremony. The county has the record much sooner since the officiant returns the signed license directly to them.
