Sumter County Marriage License Process
A Sumter County marriage license costs $86 without a premarital course. The reduced fee with a course is $61. Section 741.0305 of the Florida Statutes allows this discount when both parties complete an approved course within one year of applying. Taking the course also waives the three-day waiting period that Florida residents face. Non-Florida residents skip the wait automatically.
Both applicants sign an affidavit per Section 741.04. The license is valid for 60 days under Section 741.041 and works anywhere in the state. After the ceremony, the signed license must come back to the Sumter County Clerk within 10 days. The clerk records it into the official records and sends a copy to the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. The couple gets one free certified copy after the recording is done.
Part of the license fee covers a $2 application charge and $25 for the Domestic Violence Trust Fund under Section 741.01. Cash and credit cards are typically accepted. Check with the Sumter County Clerk about payment options and any card surcharges. Both parties must read the Family Law Handbook before the license is issued. This is required by Section 741.0306.
