How to Get a Marriage License in Hialeah

Hialeah is part of Miami-Dade County. There is no separate marriage license office in Hialeah itself. All license applications go through the Miami-Dade County Clerk of Court. The main office is at Overtown Transit Village South, 601 NW 1 Court, Suite 1900, Miami, FL 33136. Call (786) 469-2400 for questions.

Both people must come in together. You need a valid photo ID like a driver license, passport, or state ID card. U.S. citizens also need their Social Security number. If you were married before, bring the date your prior marriage ended. Walk-ins are fine, but you can save time with an appointment. Office hours run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Miami-Dade County runs six district court locations. Hialeah residents can use whichever location is most convenient. The main office in downtown Miami gets the most foot traffic, so one of the smaller satellite locations may mean a shorter wait.

There is a pre-application form on the clerk website. Fill it out before you go. It speeds things up at the counter. You still have to appear in person, but the paperwork side goes faster when the basic information is already in the system.

Hialeah Marriage License Fees and Costs

The standard fee is $86. If both parties take a premarital course from an approved provider, the fee drops to $61. The course also waives the three-day waiting period. Under Florida Statute 741.0305, the course must be completed within a year of the application date.

Want the clerk to perform your ceremony? That costs $30. The office accepts cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Personal checks are not taken. Duplicate licenses run $30 each, and any amendments need a court order plus a $30 fee.

Certified copies cost $9 for the first one and $7 for each copy after that. If you are not sure what year a marriage took place, the clerk charges $2 per year searched. These fees apply whether you order online, in person, or by mail.

Search Hialeah Marriage Records Online

The Miami-Dade Online Marriage License Bureau lets you search records from 1971 to the present. The search is free. Type in a name or license number and get results showing both parties and the marriage date. The database runs 24 hours a day.

Miami-Dade County Clerk online marriage records search portal serving Hialeah residents

Records from before 1971 are not online. Contact the clerk office at (786) 469-2400 to ask about older records. Anything before June 6, 1927 exists only at the county level since the state did not start collecting marriage data until that date.

The Florida Department of Health also maintains state marriage records from 1927 forward. A state search costs $5 for one certified copy and $4 for extras. You can order through VitalChek too, at $15 plus a $7 processing fee. For Hialeah marriages, going straight to the county clerk is usually faster and cheaper.

The Marriage License Process for Hialeah Residents

Here is what you need to do step by step:

  • Fill out the online pre-application on the Miami-Dade clerk website
  • Both people go to the clerk office with valid photo ID
  • Provide Social Security numbers (U.S. citizens)
  • Pay the $86 fee (or $61 with a premarital course certificate)
  • Wait three days if you are a Florida resident and did not take the course
  • Use the license within 60 days at any location in Florida

The three-day waiting period applies to Florida residents only. If you live out of state, you can use the license right away. Taking a premarital course eliminates the wait for everyone. The course has to come from a provider registered with the state.

Under Florida Statute 741.07, the ceremony can be performed by an ordained minister, a judge, a clerk of court or deputy clerk, or a Florida notary public. No witnesses are required by law, but having one or two is a smart idea. After the ceremony, the officiant must sign and return the license to the clerk within 10 days. The clerk then records it and sends data to the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. Full processing takes around 60 days.

Certified Copies of Hialeah Marriage Records

You can get certified copies three ways. The online portal is fastest. Pay with a credit card and copies get mailed to you. In-person requests go to the Marriage License Bureau at 601 NW 1 Court, Suite 1900, Miami, FL 33136. For mail requests, send a cashier's check or money order made out to Clerk of the Courts.

Marriage records in Miami-Dade are public documents under Florida Statutes Chapter 119. Anyone can look them up. Social Security numbers and certain personal details are redacted. If you qualify for a confidential filing, ask the clerk about the Request for Confidentiality form under Section 119.071.

If you just got married in Hialeah and need proof fast, start with the county clerk. The state office in Jacksonville takes longer because the recording process runs about two months after the ceremony date.
